Small Talks: Illustrated lectures for children of all ages
David Small tackles the universals — greed, evil, folly, peace and understanding in a cleareyed, puckish celebration of personal integrity, eccentricity, even barminess ... playfully wise, his stories should stimulate lively discussion between parents and children.
- Emily Arnold McCully, New York Times Book Review
Since 1982 when his first picture book, Eulalie and the Hopping Head, was published Caldecott Award-winning illustrator and author David Small has been making public presentations and school visits. He has spoken to audiences as large as 2,000 and as small as 25.
Although he lectures solo when discussing the art of illustration and picture book making, his illustrated lectures at schools, museums and libraries are usually given with his wife, the children’s author, Sarah Stewart. While Mr. Small draws, Ms. Stewart talks or reads a story. Together they cover a host of topics important to their audiences. They may share tales from their childhood, explain why reading and art are important in their lives, demonstrate how they turn ideas into stories, suggest ways to stimulate young imaginations, or discuss how they collaborate in the making of their award-winning picture books. Sometimes Mr. Small even reveals why he keeps his television set in the closet.
David Small is available for visits to libraries, schools, college classes and conferences. For more information on specific programs/presentations or to arrange a visit, contact (links with contact information). Whatever his topic Mr. Small’s illustrated lectures are always lively, entertaining and insightful.
